In the Spring of 2005,
an idea was born to start one of the best known "Mower Clubs" in the world.
The actual concept was thought of during the Spring of 2003 in Abrams Wisconsin. It all started with a 'Lawnmower Poker Ride"
The pre-history is traced to Eric C, Jay, Scott Z, and Brad P.
The Abrams Poker Ride was an event that took place twice a year, it helped raise funds for the Volunteer Fire Department as well as for the Trackside Bar itself.
In the Spring of 2003, Scott Z with his "General Lee" mower, Eric C with his "Green Machine", Jay with his "Yellow" mower and Brad P with his "Red Beater" filmed the event in the rain to show the rest of thier friends what they did one weekend: Riding ungoverned mowers, drinking beer and a game of tug-o-war seem like alot of fun. Kel seen the film and thought it would be a great time, he never seen an event that promotes "Outlawed Fun"; while driving on the streets from bar to bar and drinking beer for 4 miles. The next one would take place in the Fall of 2003.
In the Fall of 2003, Kel was ready to attend the "Outlawed Event" he waited all summer for. The Friday night before the event, the mower Kel was driving on the street broke its transmission. Even though after riding all summer with no problems, he had to repair the transmission that night. Finally with JB weld, tape and ALOT of glue, the repairs were finished at 1:00 A.M.
One mile from Abrams, all the friends gathered for the drive in. It seem the day would be perfect and as with everything; everybody made final mods and repairs the night before. With Kel's mower, the chain kept falling off from the start, then with a bang, the transmission blew. Kel had to be towed into town by Scott Z and everyone took turns pulling him around.
In the Spring of 2004, additional friends and more people participated in the event. The "Lawnmower Poker Run" was the next best thing to drinking beer with friends. Joe and Doug were the "Big Dawgs" of the event, with their V-Twin engines, modded mower bodies, and centrifugal clutch system, nothing could touch their speed in the streets and a local person had a John Deer Mower that could outpull anyone. Even though it was not announced, the competion between people and friends seem silent but very much alive. Scott Z's "General Lee" mower still has the highest jump of any mower, with two bent spindles to show for it. Kel broke down again and had to be pulled behind the "Slow Mow Bus".
In the Fall of 2004, the height of the "Abrams Poker Run" came to a fever pitch. With 40+ mowers, golf cart pulling trailers, and a trailer pulled by a truck filled with people, this was the first time JonnyWayne participated with his mower. Kel purchased and modded his mower "0 to 60" and everyone else had the same mowers they used before. JonnyWayne came in with the only mower that served beer and Capt-n-coke with a push of a button. Brad P was clocked at 32 M.P.H and Kel was clocked at 34.7 M.P.H. which was proof the competition was building. The drag races was at full swing at the third stop of the event. The mower vs mower pulls were also, at the end to the 4 mile journey.
In the Spring of 2005, the "Abrams Poker Run" still had its "Fever Pitch" but as with every event date, it had its fair share of complaints from local people. Either the noise of the mowers, the occasional bar dispute between managers, or the unavoidable running through people's lawns. The "Outlaw Event" seem like an event that would last a very long time, but there was trouble brewing somewhere. Kel refigured the gearing of "0 to 60" but came up with only 32 M.P.H.
During the month of May 2005, Kel came up with a concept of a 'Mower Club" of some sort. We needed something that puts us apart from everyone else. An official group or something wierd and off the wall. Everyone was really by themselves when it comes to "Poker Runs"
First talking to JonnyWayne about the idea, it was a good thought and agreed upon. Kel had the backing of Jay and Eric C as well. We all could become a "Mower Club" now we just needed a name. A few name came up, "The OutLaws" - "Extreme Team" - "Mower Outlaws" - "Extreme Mowers" and a few others.
Then Kel came up with the name "Extreme Mower Mayhem". JonnyWayne, Eric C and Jay liked the name. Something was missing, after a few fonts and writings of the name, Kel came up with !!! Xtrememowermayhem !!!
The "Mower Club" was now official; and so we're not only limited to "Poker Runs', JonnyWayne suggested in doing other things like parades or something. It was suggested we could get a website also. By this time, all of us heard of "Lawnmower Racing." but didn't think much of it. Kel joined the USLMRA Yahoo Group to get some info about the lawnmower mods, the "Mower Bug" hit Kel hard and then spread to everyone else.
Mid summer of 2005, the !!! Xtrememowermayhem !!! website was up and running. With zero hits during its first two weeks, Kel became very upset and started researching other websites and "Lawnmower Racing" info on the web. They all seem to be the same in some way or other, none had that "POP".
During the reasearch, Kel came across a "Monster Mower" build, even though there was only one out there he could find and little talk of one here and there, it was time for another. Kel brushed the idea with JohnnyWayne and both thought it was something different. Now Jay was going to make one also, at a later time.
During the early Summer and Fall of 2005, !!! Xtrememowermayhem !!! had its first public events. The Denmark Parade, Archie's Poker Run, A & W Mower Show and the Green Bay, Wisconsin "Big Boy Toy Show". At that time there were two Monster Mowers built. JonnyWayne's "CryptKeeper" and Kel's "Lawn Kong" That event also had Green Bay's first public "Mower Drag Race" and "Monster Mower Drag Race"
During the three day event, the club grew. First Ty and Sarah joined then the following day, Eric Z and Jake joined. Joe blew his transaxle and Doug did ok with his run. Kel broke a pulley and we had a number of mowers show up from Crivitz Wisconsin and surrounding areas. Its a start of a great hobby.
In the Fall of 2005, the "Abrams Poker Run" had a few suprises. First it was the first "Poker Run" to feature three monster mowers and it had its first "Mower Club" in attendence. The monster mowers were a smash hit. Eric Z was clocked at 45 M.P.H. with his mower "Crowd Pleaser" Doug was clocked at 42 M.P.H. and Joe was clocked at 47 M.P.H. A Case mower topped the John Deere mower for the pull champ.
Kel announce to the Yahoo group that a new website was up and running. Being very excited, he spread the word to various message boards that a new breed of mowers have arrived. With the exposure during the summer, this would be the only website that featured a "Babe Page" and 'The Hall of Fame Page"
Not expecting anything negative about the new club, rude comments about monster mowers came into light. Monster mowers deemed unthinkable, unsafe and photo shopped, the Babe Page and Hall of Fame page came under attack. The whole site in general came under fire from other websites and some from the Yahoo group. Many expressed the end of !!! Xtrememowermayhem !!!
The website was deemed evil and gave the sport a bad name by some and spreading this type of garbage and nonsence will cause negativity to us lawnmower racers, which was commented by others. A pure redneck kind of thing, only drunks and crap pushers would think this up.
We could have fold up like a kite and call it quits but are they crazy?? The inpouring of emails, pictures and good comments out-weigh every bad thing given to us. We have alot of first timers and features others in the "outside" only dream of doing. Maybe they thought of it but we beat them to it and we carry on with other creations. As for the club itself, we lost some members and recieved many new ones, we also gained alot of publicity.
In the Spring of 2006, the Abrams Poker run featured four monster mowers, but this time the attendence was only a few people and our group, not the massive crowd as seen before. It seem the new bar ownership and nit picking between ownership killed the "Abrams Poker Run" and the last ride is now.
During the years of 2006 - 2008, if every details of Xtreme Mower Mayhem were detailed, you'll be reading many pages! The same is true for the early years. The laughs and tricks played on each other, the awards we won, the funds we help raise, the emails we received from people who we inspire, the pictures of projects we receive from fellow "Mower Hobbiest" , Babes, and now we joined the ARMA Mower Racing Association, known as Badger State Mower Racing Association.
Xtreme Mower Mayhem continues to grow and the website hits are in the hundreds everyday. You can Google search just about every aspect of either monster mowers or racing or watch film from VH1 Webjunk or Youtube, we seem to be everywhere.
We are proud and honored to be part of "your new founded hobby", where the limits are only to your imagination.
